Chapter 2 – Lens

1. Start here with every guided session

SESSION OVERVIEW

This session builds on one thing: the gap. The space between a reaction and your response to it. Right now, for most people, that gap is either very small or doesn’t exist at all. The reaction happens and the response follows almost simultaneously — as if they’re one thing.

They’re not. And this session begins to create the felt sense of that separation — not through analysis or effort, but through the simple experience of watching your own reactions from a place of stillness, without being pulled into any of them.

You don’t need to change anything yet. That comes later. For now, the only task is to see clearly.

Estimated total time: 18–22 minutes (5–8 minutes written, 12 minutes audio).

PS… Don’t forget, Chapter 3 does not have a guided session!!

2. Then answer the questions…

Read each question carefully. Then write. Full sentences where you can — not bullet points. The more specific and honest your answers, the more the session will give you.

These questions are about what’s already in you — reactions you’ve already had, patterns you already carry. There are no right answers. The goal is specificity, not self-improvement. Write what’s actually true.

Q1 Think of a recent reaction you’re confident was Type 1 — protective or positive.

What was the situation, and how did the reaction feel from the inside? What did it tell you?

Q2 Think of a recent moment of genuine Type 2 — something you handled without drama that might once have activated you. What was it, and how did that calm feel different from suppression?

Q3 Is there a Type 3 in your recent past — something genuinely difficult that deserved the weight you gave it? Name it briefly. You don’t need to go into it. Just acknowledge it.

Q4 Think of a recent Type 4. Something that felt like Type 1 or Type 3 in the moment but, looking back, was bigger than the situation warranted. What did it feel like from the inside — and what do you think it was actually connected to?

Keep that last answer in mind as you listen. Not to analyse it — just to hold it lightly.

The session will work with it.

4. And the Ending

Take a moment before you move. If the weather metaphor felt real — if there was a genuine felt sense of watching rather than being swept along — notice that. That quality is what you’re developing. It will become more available the more you return to it.

Over the next few days, when a reaction arrives — any reaction — see if you can notice it with the same quality of attention you had in the session. Not in a detached way.

Just with a fraction of the curiosity you had in here.

That’s the practice. Simple and repeatable.

The next chapter will begin to explain what’s actually happening underneath all of this — the mechanism behind the reactions, the patterns, and why this kind of observation starts to produce change in a way that analysis alone doesn’t.
